Once that’s done, Microsoft is expected to begin building the platform at its Atlanta, Georgia headquarters, with the help of a team from IBM and Google.
The company is expected on March 17 to release a developer preview of the platform, which will support the next-generation cloud-computing platform, Microsoft says.
Developers will be able to use the platform as a base for their own devices, Microsoft’s blog post says.
It will support a range of computing needs, including the creation of applications that leverage cloud computing, data analytics, cloud computing services and cloud storage, the blog post explains.
The next-gen platform will include hardware that is designed to meet current standards for security and reliability.
It’ll include Intel Atom chips, Microsoft claims, which are expected to support up to 20 terabytes of memory and 4 terabytes for flash memory.
The platform will also include a standard Linux distribution.
Microsoft’s announcement of the developer preview comes after the company’s own Cloud Foundry initiative, which aims to create an open-source platform for building software and services that will make it easier for companies to deploy and run their own cloud-based cloud computing.
Microsoft is partnering with IBM and a number of other cloud providers to build the platform and is targeting developers to start using the platform within a month.
Microsoft has also teamed up with Google to help the company develop its own open source platform that will eventually be able, with support from the company, to run on Google’s Cloud Platform, which is designed for creating a cloud-native computing platform that runs on Linux, Windows and other platforms.
Microsoft said the platform will have the potential to deliver “a truly powerful computing platform” for cloud computing platforms, which include Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services.
Microsoft also expects to begin rolling out the platform in a few months, with a public preview available by the end of March.
